About the Job

About Fresh is seeking a Manager, People & Operations to serve as a trusted partner to our leadership team, ensuring that our vision for a values-based culture and effective people operations function is put into practice across the organization. This role owns the full employee lifecycle — from onboarding through performance management — while also driving the internal operations, executive support, and board management functions that keep a small, fully remote, nationally distributed nonprofit running smoothly.

This is an ideal role for an HR generalist and operational problem-solver who thrives in ambiguity, enjoys building systems from scratch, and is energized by mission-driven work at the intersection of food justice and health equity. You will report to the COO and work closely with the CEO, leadership team, and Board of Directors.

What You'll Do

HR & People Operations

Serve as a trusted partner to the leadership team, operationalizing their strategic vision for a values-based culture and effective people operations across the organization
Lead the development and execution of the annual performance review process and broader performance management infrastructure
Serve as the primary point of contact and relationship manager for Justworks, our Professional Employer Organization (PEO)
Ensure compliance with all state requirements and employment laws where staff are located, including state-specific registrations, filings, and reporting
Maintain an up-to-date, accessible, and comprehensive employee handbook and other employee resources including annual trainings and internal knowledge management systems
Support professional development across the team by identifying opportunities, recommending resources and tools, and tracking budget
Plan and coordinate in-person team convenings and retreats
Streamline and enhance onboarding and offboarding processes
Develop, field, and analyze results from regular employee engagement and satisfaction surveys

Internal Operations & Executive Support

Identify and implement tools and processes — including opportunities to incorporate AI — to increase organizational efficiency and resilience across all functions, leading employee onboarding and education on new tools and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders as needed
Support fiscally sponsored organizations and projects with administrative, operational, and HR-related functions
Manage device and supply procurement for staff as needed, in coordination with our IT Security partner
Coordinate travel and event logistics for the executive team as needed
Streamline subscription payments, receipt procedures, and other administrative processes in partnership with the finance team
Manage and maintain insurance policies, renewals, and related documentation

Board Management & Governance

Partner with CEO and COO to facilitate consistent, meaningful engagement with the Board of Directors and each individual Board member
Plan quarterly board meetings in partnership with the COO and CEO
Produce and distribute monthly board updates and materials for Board meetings
Manage the board's shared knowledge space and documentation
Support board recruitment efforts through coordination, project management, and briefing preparation

Special Projects

Support and/or lead execution of special events as needed (e.g., fundraising events)
Take on other projects as assigned based on organizational priorities

What You'll Bring

Required

3+ years of HR experience at a small (fewer than 20 employees), remote-first nonprofit with employees located in 3+ states
Strong understanding of HR fundamentals, including multi-state and federal employment law and compliance, performance management, and building strong internal culture
Experience working with and understanding the mechanics of Professional Employer Organizations (PEOs)
Experience interfacing with, coordinating, and supporting a nonprofit Board of Directors
Experience planning and executing internal and external events (e.g., fundraising events, team retreats)
Familiarity with nonprofit fiscal sponsorship structures and related governance
Excellent project management skills, with a proven ability to independently manage multiple priorities and complex projects while coordinating with internal and external stakeholders with clarity, timeliness, and professionalism
Outstanding attention to detail and organizational skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Proven ability to work independently in a remote environment with minimal supervision
Proficiency with HR systems, project management tools, and Microsoft 365 (SharePoint, Teams, etc.), along with the ability to quickly learn and adopt new technology
Passion for mission-driven work and a commitment to food justice and health equity
Demonstrated commitment to fostering organizational culture, ensuring psychological safety, and designing and leading diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) efforts

Preferred

Experience working within the Food as Medicine sector
Professional in Human Resources® (PHR) Certification
Experience setting up and managing Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) for hiring
Experience designing, fielding, and reporting on results from employee surveys
